Kozan Karen McLean is the director of our community in Traverse City, and facilitates practice locally under the guidance of Sokuzan, our head teacher.
Kozan has been committed to meditation as a spiritual path since 2003, deeply influenced by the teachings of the Tibetan Book of the Dead while sitting in meditation with her grandmother through her last days in hospice.
Kozan met Sokuzan in 2009 and became a close student. She began a dharma study group in 2010 which eventually became known as SokukoJi Buddhist Community-Traverse City, an extension of SokukoJi Buddhist Temple Monastery. She was ordained as a priest in Sokuzan’s lineage in 2014. She travels regularly to practice and study at SokukoJi Temple Monastery in Battle Creek.
In addition to her practice with the SokukoJi sangha in Traverse City and Battle Creek, Kozan volunteers for the Michigan Department of Corrections and develops the study curriculum as part of the SokukoJi Prison Dharma Project and is an active member of Area Council on Religious Diversity (ACORD). She also works part time as a physical therapist. Kozan is available for meditation instruction and practice support.
